Agricultural safety seminars
For more than 27 years, thousands of farm owners, managers, and workers have attended SAIF's agricultural safety seminars, learning how to be safe in one of the most hazardous occupations.
Held in several cities across the state, these free, half-day trainings will begin in November 2025 and run through March 2026. Some trainings are conducted entirely in Spanish.
Although the seminars are designed for owners, operators, supervisors, and foremen, anyone working in the agricultural industry is welcome to attend. Small agricultural employers attending the seminar will meet one of the four requirements that exempt small ag operations from random OSHA inspections.
Stop, lock, and live: Energy control that saves lives
Farms are filled with powerful equipment, but without proper machine guarding and energy control like lockout/tagout, our lives can be at serious risk. In this session, we’ll walk through real-world incidents, practical steps for controlling hazardous energy, and how to identify and fix the most common guarding issues found on farms. You'll learn not only the why, but the how — showing you protective devices that you can use right away. Protect your farm, one lock, one guard, one life at a time.
Fire code on the farm
Most of us are aware of the potential for OSHA or ODA enforcement on our farms – but many forget about enforcement agencies with regulations we are required to comply with – state and local fire marshals. This hour will feature expertise from a deputy fire marshal, outlining common safety and compliance violations he encounters while working with the ag industry, best practices to avoid fires and related injuries, and real-world case studies to demonstrate the importance of ensuring these practices are in place in our farms and workplaces.
Breathe easy: Have the right respiratory program on your farm
Gases, vapors, dust, chemicals, and other airborne hazards are common on farms — and without the right personal protective equipment (PPE), they can pose serious health risks for those working there. This session will walk you through selecting and using proper respiratory protection, from dust masks to respirators, plus fit-testing and training requirements. We’ll also cover protective clothing, footwear, and other PPE that meets both OSHA standards and the risks that you face on your farm. Join us and take control of your farm’s respiratory protection program — before hazards take control of you.
Making the most of safety committee meetings
We all know we should be conducting monthly safety meetings on our farms. How do we make those meetings a productive opportunity to promote safety while fulfilling our compliance obligations? This hour will cover the distinctions between informal safety meetings and a formal safety committee, outline what a compliant safety committee consists of, ensure understanding of the training our safety committee members are required to receive, review documentation requirements, and provide demonstrations of the discussion items and conversations that are the most effective safety have.
All seminars are from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
