How to build your safety and health program

A new online resource from SAIF helps you put together an effective program to keep your workers safe.

Establishing a safety and health program can seem like a daunting task, but a new online resource from SAIF can help you find and put together all the information you need.

Building your safety and health programs offers information and resources for 28 major topics for general industry, including ergonomics, fall protection, forklifts, heat illness, scaffolding, safety committees, and wildfire smoke. You can easily find the topics relevant to your business and print or download the guide pages as pdfs to put into your safety program binders, ready for your employees to use.

Each topic guide page contains:

  • A link to any relevant OSHA rule
  • An overview of any OSHA requirements for that topic
  • Best practices
  • Training resources
  • Links to sample forms and other resources from SAIF, OSHA, and other organizations

In addition to the 28 individual topic guides, the resource provides information about the basic elements of building a safety and health program, as well as a retention guide on how long you should keep your safety and health documents.

“These safety and health guides are a great starting point for building your programs. They include templates and resources you can use to create a written program that's customized for your business,” says Leigh Manning, SAIF senior safety management consultant. “Having a good safety and health program can also help promote a positive workplace culture that yields benefits like decreased turnover, a safer workplace, and reduced business costs.”
