Ladder safety
Checking ladder safety before climbing is critical,
no matter what the size. Periodic maintenance
extends a ladder's life, saves replacement
costs, and minimizes the risk of injuries.
Ladder maintenance tips
Periodic maintenance extends a ladder's life, saves replacement costs, and minimizes the risk of injuries. Proper maintenance includes inspecting the ladder regularly, repairing damage, and ensuring all fittings and other hardware are tight and secure.
You should also:
- Ensure steps are free of grease, oil, water, and other slippery materials.
- Replace lower steps on wooden ladders when one-fourth of the step surface has worn away.
- Inspect and replace damaged or worn components according to the manufacturer's specifications.
- Inspect the side rails for weathering and cracks.
- Do not paint wood ladders. (You may use a clear protective coating, but paint can hide defects.)
- Check safety feet on straight or extension ladders to confirm they are in place and in good working order.
