Attorneys
SAIF's Legal Division consists of over 35 attorneys who represent SAIF and our policyholders in contested workers' compensation claims. Attorneys prepare cases, appear at hearings and other claims-related proceedings, mediate or negotiate and settle claims as appropriate, and provide legal assistance and advice to our claims staff.

Claims adjusters
Our claims adjusters manage workers' compensation claims to serve the needs of injured workers, policyholders, and other customers. Through contact with employers, injured workers, physicians, and attorneys, the claims adjuster coordinates and directs claims management activities. Claims adjuster trainees participate in a ten-week training program leading to certification as claims examiners as required by the State of Oregon.

Industrial hygienists
Industrial hygienists provide professional industrial hygiene services and consultation to customers to identify, evaluate and control occupational health hazards in the workplace. They provide technical expertise and support to SAIF's safety management consultants and underwriters in assessing risk and managing occupational disease claims.

Insurance representatives
Working out of SAIF's Service Center in Portland, our insurance reps are the primary contact and workers' compensation insurance resource for our customers assigned to our Small Business Center. They underwrite coverage up to $20,000, provide insurance quotes, issue and maintain policies, and contact SAIF specialists to help customers in getting assistance to improve workplace safety or assist an injured worker in returning to work.

Investigators
SAIF investigators conduct workers' compensation investigations by interviewing injured workers, employers, witnesses, and others, and preparing objective, concise written reports of their findings. Working out of SAIF's corporate office in Salem or our branch offices around the state, they may specialize in compensability, fraud, or surveillance investigations.

Medical auditors
These specialists verify and evaluate medical data from injured workers and medical providers, and conduct audits to ensure compliance with state laws, federal guidelines, medical code definitions, contracts, and SAIF policy for the purpose of payment of medical bills.

Nurse consultants
Using a broad knowledge of medical conditions, injuries, and health care delivery systems, our nurse consultants serve as a medical resource for SAIF's staff and customers and as a liaison to medical providers, managed care organizations, billing offices, and other insurers. They specialize in medical case management, cost containment, and medical training.

Premium auditor
These specialists perform field audits of insured businesses to determine the correct premium base necessary for calculating actual earned policy premiums. They work out of our regional offices located throughout the state.

Return-to-work consultants
Our consultants work with employers and SAIF claims adjusters to help workers return to productive employment following a workplace injury. They actively promote return-to-work programs as a strategy for reducing claims costs, and they help businesses design and implement return-to-work programs for their workplaces.

Safety management consultants
These experts provide technical, safety, and health services to help our customers develop and maintain workplace safety through effective loss control and safety programs. Behavior-based safety approaches are at the core of these efforts to increase safety, thereby reducing losses.

Sales & marketing representatives
SAIF senior account representatives are responsible for acquiring and/or retaining business. They provide consultative services to policyholders and, as a member of a customer service team, coordinate services to our customers.

Underwriters
Underwriters manage and evaluate existing insurance policies--and applications for new policies--to ensure suitability for coverage. Using pertinent factors such as degree of risk, hazards, financial position, loss control programs, nature and type of losses, claim frequency, claim severity, loss ratio, and payroll and premium history, underwriters evaluate those factors against SAIF's book of business, determine suitability for coverage, and develop competitive proposals appropriate for the situation.

Vocational coordinators
Vocational coordinators determine injured worker eligibility for vocational services and help provide vocational assistance services to facilitate the injured worker's return to work. They serve as technical experts and provide training to claims staff and others for vocational-related issues.
