A new section of the Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP Extension Act of 2007 (MMSE) will go into effect in early 2010. This new law requires workers' compensation insurers, as well as other insurers, to report certain claim information to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
This information will be used by CMS to determine whether CMS or the insurer is the primary payer of medical benefits for the Medicare beneficiary.
As a workers' compensation insurer, SAIF is the "responsible reporting entity" (RRE) for claims filed with us, which means that we are responsible for reporting the claim information to CMS.
The implementation date has been moved to the second quarter of 2010, and we have a project team reviewing the rules and making necessary system changes to ensure our compliance with this new law. If you have any questions about SAIF's role as the RRE for your clients' workers' compensation claims, please contact Lisa Wilch of SAIF at 503.315.3520.
